Ive never heard anything he did that had that particular feel to it. They said to me, Youre playing it wrong. But the manager had gone out of his way to call me before we took the Christmas break since they were so happy with the tracks wed done. So, he had to be at the front of the stage. Basically, Phil flipped at Chester during the Going Back tour, for not playing exactly what he wanted to play, and they haven't spoken since. That was my first real, name person I worked with. I seem to recall Chester had a falling out with the post-Collins duo too, when they rejected his request to become a full member in the band. So, youre a freelance drummer hoping to get re-upped for a gig with a guy who has hired you again and again over more than two decades, and you dont send a holiday card? I don't think he was ever going to be on board with expanding it to additional legs. Whats going on? He said, Didnt you quit the band? I said, No, what are you talking about? Didnt you quit with Alphonso? I go, Alphonso quit? Do you recall much from the reunion show with Peter Gabriel in 1982 at Milton Keynes Bowl? [Laughs] But Ive really been enjoying my life. But he still had that American stuff. Man, I still love to play. Drummers are kept in the background because DRUMS CAN'T MOVE AROUND THE SCENARIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was really disturbing because for the first two weeks. They really enjoy life and love to laugh. Phil and I, from the very first rehearsal when he sat down and we started jamming together, we just locked, he said. What did you study? Long story short: Collins turned up in a bad mood for the 2010 "Going Back" tour and griped at Thompson because Thompson hadn't prepared the Motown drum parts in enough detail. Oh, my goodness. I mean, how many damn sings can one guywrite for Disney? I could not follow a single conversation. Enjoy! I interviewed Chester years ago for Percussive Notes, and he's a great guy, we actually spent an entire day together. Unfortunately, somehow Ike or his people lost the master tape. Unknown to me, he quit over the Christmas holidays. [Laughs] They were like, How could you be down here doing this and not our tour? I was like, Im just here a few days. But I was really trying to be mindful of family time. At one point, we discussed it and it was like, If we dont really need to be there, you guys are fine to go and do what youre doing. [Laughs]. Getting the gig was no walk in the park. No mud slinging at all. Were just dealing with Covid. You couldnt take yourself that seriously. When we got to rehearsal, I didnt know about the stuff that was going on in Phils life. I agree, one weak album, because GTR was a multi members enterproce that involved even Steve Howe, but it wa a disaster. We want to hear it. In this 2014. Well, its been quiet. I met him the night before at his house. It was fun. I still remember that. Hed teach me how to play along with albums and where to put the fill and how to sing along with the melody and not get lost in the solos and how to make it swing. Exactly. I think he got a little annoyed since I had done an interview and they asked which I enjoyed [Genesis or Collins solo] more. But the opening fill, all of that, is me. I guess they were never able to release it because Peter is pretty spontaneous and it drove the sound engineer crazy. I absolutely loved this round table discussion of Zappa's drummers. He had seen what turned out to be my last Weather Report concert, but he was very familiar with the Zappa stuff. But back to the point, the investment in this album was big, Bruford, Levin, Wetton, Ian Mc'Donnald, Julian Colbeck, etc are not cheap, and he knew from thestartthis album would never be a hit. He wasn't the only member of the band, and it wasn't a chnage that happened overnight. But hed get more comfortable with it and be really involved with putting it together. Reading the book I get the feeling that he only felt really involved in Selling EnglandFirst he says he had a slight inferior complex as a composer, his ideas were not well recieved, his marriage ended etc. I saw online that Phil said in some interview he was quitting the band. Also note that Onion Head didn't do much writting on the good Genesis LPs like: Foxtrot, Trespass, Selling England, Lamb, Nursery, Trick of the tail, EWnd and Wuthering. It just turned out to be a one-off, but fortunately we recorded and videotaped it. I dont know if they were connected owner-wise, but there was a whole circuit of those theaters. Apparently Phil and Bill grew up near each other and knew each other fairly well. Part of me is not disappointed that Im not playing those same tunes again after 30 years. I am a huge Genesis fan, but am only in high school so I never experienced Genesis when they were popular. Phil was not sure family-wise and he hasnt had the easiest of times there. He turned around and stared at me. Not too many of them sing even backing vocals. They are phenomenal musicians. He basically played us these tunes hed come up with. After 1978, this must have felt like a long-term gig. So I continue quite off topic!Actually I havent heard Hacketts Genesis revisited - is it good? He might have been. Not every Rock musician has musical studies. It was a rare thing where the lead singer of a band is also the drummer. Captain Beefheart plays harmonica on the album. And he just totally shot down the idea of doing anything. And of course, there was another drummer there and it was an audition.
